Infrared Printing with a Laptop or Notebook Computer

Setting Up the Laptop or Notebook in Windows 98

If the operating system you are using is Windows 98, the computer's BIOS settings may need to be reconfigured for infrared printing. Use one of the following methods to locate instructions for configuring the laptop or notebook:

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

The Control Panel screen appears.

  1. Do one of the following:
  1. Select the Options tab.
  2. Select the Enable infrared communications box.
  3. Click OK.

  1. Click Start > Settings > Printers to open the Printers window.
  2. Right-click hp deskjet 9xx series printer to view the shortcut menu.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Select the Details tab.
  5. Select one of the following options:

  1. Locate the infrared lens on the laptop or notebook.

See the computer's operating manual for the location of the infrared lens.

  1. Align the computer's infrared lens with the printer's infrared lens.

The computer should be positioned no more than one meter (three feet) from the printer and within a 30-degree total angle from the printer's infrared lens.

  1. Remove any obstacles between the two devices.

The infrared light begins to blink when the devices are correctly aligned.

  1. Send a file to print following normal print procedures.

The infrared light on the printer displays a solid beam during the transfer process. When printing is complete, the light begins to blink.

If the Infrared Monitor is displayed, the Status tab indicates the progress of the infrared activity as the printer receives and prints the file.

If the laptop or notebook is moved out of range of the printer's infrared lens at any time during the printing process, the infrared light turns off and the printer stops printing. Realign the devices within 3-30 seconds, and the print job will resume.

  1. Click Start > Settings > Printers to open the Printers window.
  2. Right-click hp deskjet 9xx series printer to view the shortcut menu.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Select the Ports tab.
  5. Select IR Local Port.
  6. Click OK.

  1. Locate the infrared lens on the laptop or notebook.

  1. Align the computer's infrared lens with the printer's infrared lens.

Displaying the Infrared Icon on the Taskbar

The infrared icon appears on the taskbar after you configure your laptop or notebook for infrared printing. If the icon does not appear, follow these instructions to turn it on:

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Infrared icon.

The Infrared Monitor dialog box is displayed.

  1. Select the Preferences tab.
  2. Click the Display the Infrared Monitor icon on the taskbar box.
  3. Click OK.

Infrared Printing with a Palm Pilot

  1. Locate the infrared lens on the Palm Pilot.
  2. Align the Palm Pilot's infrared lens with the printer's infrared lens.

The Palm Pilot should be positioned no more than one meter (three feet) from the printer and within a 30-degree total angle from the printer's infrared lens.

  1. Remove any obstacles between the Palm Pilot and printer.
  2. Do one of the following:

The infrared light projects a solid beam on the printer during the information transfer process. When the information transfer is complete, the light turns off.

Printing, rather than beaming, requires a printing program which enhances the appearance of your printed information. Follow the specific procedures provided by the printing program when printing.

Infrared Printing with an HP PhotoSmart Digital Camera

  1. Locate the infrared lens on the digital camera.

See the camera's operating manual for the location of the infrared lens.

  1. Align the camera's infrared lens with the printer's infrared lens.

The camera should be positioned no more than one meter (three feet) from the printer and within a 30-degree total angle from the printer's infrared lens.

  1. Remove any obstacles between the camera and printer.
  2. Send a photo to print following normal sending or sharing procedures of the camera. See the camera's operating manual for instructions.

The infrared light projects a solid beam on the printer during the information transfer process. When the information transfer is completed, the light turns off.

Infrared Printing with a Windows CE Device

  1. Locate the infrared lens on the Windows CE device.

See the device's operating manual for the location of the infrared lens.

  1. Align the infrared lens on the Windows CE device with the printer's infrared lens.

The Windows CE device should be positioned no more than one meter (three feet) from the printer and within a 30-degree total angle from the printer's infrared lens.

  1. Remove any obstacles between the CE device and the printer.
  2. Open the file you want to print.
  3. Use one of the following methods to display the hp deskjet 9xx series screen:

The option selected varies depending on the software program you are using.

The hp deskjet 9xx series screen appears displaying three tab options: Setup, Features, and Advanced.

  1. Choose the following option in the Printer box:
  1. Select IRDA in the Port box.
  2. Click OK.

The infrared light projects a solid beam on the printer during the information transfer process. When information transfer is complete, the light turns off.
