Infrared Printing with a Laptop or Notebook Computer
Setting Up the Laptop or Notebook in Windows 98
If the operating system you are using is Windows 98, the computer's BIOS settings may need to be reconfigured for infrared printing. Use one of the following methods to locate instructions for configuring the laptop or notebook:
- See the instructions that came with the laptop or notebook.
- Log onto the laptop manufacturer's Website or contact its customer support.
- Log onto the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) website at:
http://www.irda.org.The Control Panel screen appears.
- Double-click the Infrared icon.
- Click the Infrared icon at the end of the taskbar if it is displayed.
Selecting the Printer in Windows 98
- Click Start > Settings > Printers to open the Printers window.
- Right-click hp deskjet 9xx series printer to view the shortcut menu.
- Select Properties.
- Select the Details tab.
- Select one of the following options:
- LPTx: infrared printing port. This is normally the LPT3 port.
- COM: infrared serial port. This is normally the COM4 port.
Printing in Windows 98
See the computer's operating manual for the location of the infrared lens.
The computer should be positioned no more than one meter (three feet) from the printer and within a 30-degree total angle from the printer's infrared lens.
The infrared light begins to blink when the devices are correctly aligned.
The infrared light on the printer displays a solid beam during the transfer process. When printing is complete, the light begins to blink.
If the Infrared Monitor is displayed, the Status tab indicates the progress of the infrared activity as the printer receives and prints the file.

- Click Start > Settings > Printers to open the Printers window.
- Right-click hp deskjet 9xx series printer to view the shortcut menu.
- Select Properties.
- Select the Ports tab.
- Select IR Local Port.
- Click OK.

See the computer's operating manual for the location of the infrared lens.

The infrared icon appears on the taskbar after you configure your laptop or notebook for infrared printing. If the icon does not appear, follow these instructions to turn it on:
The Infrared Monitor dialog box is displayed.
- Select the Preferences tab.
- Click the Display the Infrared Monitor icon on the taskbar box.
- Click OK.
Infrared Printing with a Palm Pilot
- Locate the infrared lens on the Palm Pilot.
- Align the Palm Pilot's infrared lens with the printer's infrared lens.
The Palm Pilot should be positioned no more than one meter (three feet) from the printer and within a 30-degree total angle from the printer's infrared lens.
- Use the Beam command to print a single calendar appointment, one or more business cards, to-do list items, or memos.
- Use the Print command to send one or more items such as calendar appointments, email messages, phone lists, or to-do lists to the printer.
The infrared light projects a solid beam on the printer during the information transfer process. When the information transfer is complete, the light turns off.

Printing, rather than beaming, requires a printing program which enhances the appearance of your printed information. Follow the specific procedures provided by the printing program when printing.
Infrared Printing with an HP PhotoSmart Digital Camera
See the camera's operating manual for the location of the infrared lens.
The camera should be positioned no more than one meter (three feet) from the printer and within a 30-degree total angle from the printer's infrared lens.
- Remove any obstacles between the camera and printer.
- Send a photo to print following normal sending or sharing procedures of the camera. See the camera's operating manual for instructions.
The infrared light projects a solid beam on the printer during the information transfer process. When the information transfer is completed, the light turns off.
Infrared Printing with a Windows CE Device
See the device's operating manual for the location of the infrared lens.
The Windows CE device should be positioned no more than one meter (three feet) from the printer and within a 30-degree total angle from the printer's infrared lens.
- Remove any obstacles between the CE device and the printer.
- Open the file you want to print.
- Use one of the following methods to display the hp deskjet 9xx series screen:
- Click File > Print, then select Properties.
- Click File > Print Setup, then select Properties.
- Click File > Print > Setup, then select Properties.
The option selected varies depending on the software program you are using.
