Motivation

An "Organization" like PUCON, albeit somewhat virtual, has a reasonable amount of data. In PUCONs case these data are centrally kept in PUCONNAS01, a NAS. This NAS has rewdundant Disks, but is nevertheless in a single location and therefore prone to destrucion by water, fire or similar.

Therefore, a backup system is desireable.

PUTABACKUP010 - Tape Backup using DLT-IV Tapes

In November 2025 I stumbled across a set of 100 pre-used DLT-IV tapes for the moderate price of 29,- EUR on eBay. In an Impulse I bought them.

Consequently, I now needed a tape drive to handle them. This wasn't very easy, but in the end I found an HP Storageworks DLT-8000 drive.

As a dedicated backup server I chose to use Vorlage:PUCONSRV07.

This was equipped with an LSI20320IE LVD-SCSI HBA, also bought off eBay.

What follows now is sort of a Lab Notebook keeping notes about the actions performed when trying to install and put into operation a tape backup solution based on the aforementioned hardware.
